Chili competition raises money for Joplin Fire Department

News

A local business is hosting a chili contest to raise money for the Joplin Fire Department.

The Calypso Scuba Shop had several different chilies for the contest. Joplin firefighters judged the event, and picked their favorites to decide the winner. While the firefighters were excited to have some warm chili on this cold day, they are even more thankful for the support from the community.

Joplin Fire Dept. Capt. John McDaniel says, “Uh, it really means a lot to us. We as a fire department try to be a part of the community that we serve, and having them invite us today really shows what we’re doing works.”
Calypso Dive Shop Manager Valerie Earl says, “Every fireman I know gives and gives of themselves, and this is just a way we can give back to them.”

The person with the highest scoring chili receives a gift card. There is also a People’s Choice Award for the chili that was most liked by the people who attended.
