CDC provides grant to cover infant screening for spinal muscular atrophy


Children born in the Sunflower State will soon be tested for another condition.

Thanks to a $250 thousand dollar plus grant from the Centers for Disease Control, infants born in Kansas beginning in September of 2020, will also be screened for spinal muscular atrophy. That will bring the number of conditions screened for at birth to 31.

Grant money will pay for new instrumentation to detect the condition, training for those conducting the testing and new a new database for tracking and following up on the results.
