Carl Junction library supporters asking for city vote on a library tax

News

A group of library supporters are handing over a petition drive, asking for a city vote on a library tax.

Carl Junction city workers are checking the hundreds of signatures to see if the numbers meet the state requirement for consideration by the Board of Aldermen. The petition asks that a property tax be placed on the ballot.

City leaders could consider the request as early as next week. A potential vote to move forward could put the question before residents as early as next spring.

“That’d kind of be our next steps, when to get it on the ballot the next time around. Oh course the next one is April and then we could also do the November of 2019,” says Steve Lawver, CJ City Administrator.

Carl Junction currently has no city library. The proposed library property tax would fund a future operation by adding ten cents per hundred dollars assessed value to Carl Junction property taxes.
