Update: Suspicious device at Royal Orleans not an explosive


Update—-The Springfield Fire Department Bomb Squad investigated the suspicious device and found it to be a pipe wrapped in tape. The device was not explosive.

Residents of the complex and MSSU students are allowed back into their housing while police continue the investigation.

Previous story — Joplin and Jasper County authorities have the area contained and have evacuated a nearby dorm as a precaution. The Springfield Fire Department Bomb Squad is heading to the scene to help.

A maintenance employee at the apartment complex called police after finding a possible pipe bomb in a dumpster. The person described it as a pipe with caps and tape around it.

Joplin Police ask that you avoid the area while they continue to investigate.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin Police are investigating a report of a suspicious device at an apartment complex near Missouri Southern State University.

Around 9:30 A.M. Thursday police were called to the Royal Orleans Apartments on College View Drive.

Authorities are on scene now and are waiting for a drone before approaching the device to investigate.
