Sunday night members of the community are remembering a teacher who was killed early last week.
Residents, friends, and staff members gathered in front of Benton Elementary School to have a vigil for kindergarten teacher Angel Hayes. She was struck and killed while doing crosswalk duty at the school. Music, prayer, scripture readings, and those wishing to speak about they’re love for Hayes were a part of this evening’s memorial. Love rocks made yesterday were on display outside of the school with messages of healing and comfort–the rocks will be encouragement for students Monday. One of angel’s friends that used to teach at the school says that he is really thankful to see the community come together to help the school.
“We just really appreciate the support of the community and from people in the surrounding areas. I know that the kindergarten teachers here, the principal here, the staff members here. It means the world to them to see the amount of support. It really is remarkable.” says Chett Daniel, a former teacher at Benton Elementary.
Students will return to class tomorrow morning. Councilors will be available to help anyone who needs to step away from class for extra support.
