Baxter Springs PD warms residents of new scam

News

An area police department is warning residents to be weary of a possible phone scam.

Baxter Springs police say a resident received a call from someone claiming to be with publisher’s clearing house. They told the person they had won a prize of more than five million dollars, a Mercedes-Benz and a washer and dryer. In order to receive those gifts, they would need to send a cash payment in the amount of nearly six hundred dollars via Western Union in order to pay taxes on those items.

As a result of this incident, officers say you should be weary of releasing any personal information over the phone.
