Area bus drivers put skills to the test in new event

News

Bus drivers are putting their skills to the test in the first ever Southwest Missouri Bus Rodeo.

Nine school districts from around southwest Missouri participated.

Drivers spent months of preparation by studying the rules and regulations of the job.

Then about a week ago, they took a written test.

And Saturday, for the final step of the process, drivers got behind the wheel and competed in different courses to see how their skills measured up to the next person

Michelle Embrey, Neosho Schools Transportation Director, says, “While they are driving their routes, they are going to be a little more aware of where that bus is in relation to the road, how am I making my turns and am I encroaching on other lanes, and so our whole goal is to improve safety overall for all our area bus drivers.”

Prize money and trophies were given out to first, second, and third places.

The winners will then be able to compete at the state level.
