Christmas came a little early for 30 students in the Joplin area today.
The folks from Academy Sports and Outdoors teamed up with the Joplin area firefighters Christmas for Kids program to give the deserving children a new bike and helmet. The event rewards local kids for perfect attendance, academic performance, good behavior, and need.
This marks the 17th anniversary of Academy’s annual bike donation. The sporting good store also donated a 1 thousand dollar shopping spree toward the fire department’s annual toy drive.
“One of the biggest requests we get for these kids is a bike. Many of these kids, their families don’t have the ability to buy a bike. And so for Academy to come along and offer 30 bikes, man, that’s just amazing,” says Adam Grimes, Joplin Area Firefighters Christmas for Kids.
“We found that it was very important to reach out to those families and make it to where somebody has something to open up on Christmas,” says Mackenszee Berg, Academy Hardlines Manager.
The bike donation program occurs throughout December across Academy’s stores in 16 states. In total, around 55 hundred boys and girls will benefit from more than $400 thousand dollars in bikes and helmets, at more than 120 separate donation events.
