Although pickup trucks are a popular target for car thieves, a sedan tops the list for 2012. More than 58,000 Honda Accords were taken across the country last year. It's #1 in the state of Kansas as well... while the rest of the Four States had more trucks taken. And specifically in Joplin, the Ford F-150 is frequently stolen. But Joplin officers add that of the 239 reports in 2012, not every one was a typical motor vehicle. They say scooter theft has been a growing trend in city limits.
Joplin Police Lt. Matt Stewart said, "They're hard to secure, they're light weight and so it's not that big of a deal for someone to pick up the scooter and put it in the back of a truck or trailer and take off with it."
Vehicle theft dropped 17 percent in Joplin last year... and nationally has been cut in half in the last 20 years.
