GALENA, KS.--- A new bank opening in Galena is helping to shape tens of millions of dollars in economic development in Southeast Kansas. The strip mall, known as Prospector's Station, is officially welcoming a new bank. University Bank held its grand opening this morning. It is located on the Ortho-Four States campus off of old Route 66 in Galena.
"Our customers invested and had projects in Galena and asked us to be a part of those. So, we've financed this strip center and we've become a tenant. We're here to provide services for the community," said Tad Dunham, University Bank President.
Currently, the campus houses four different medical centers and a growing strip mall. Community leaders are expecting the commercial center to contribute greatly to economic development in Southeast Kansas.
"It will service the retail market, it will service the commercial market and it will just be another avenue that investors and retail people in the community will have another tool for them to utilize," said Roger Heckert, Board of Directors.
In addition to the bank, Prospector's Station is also expecting to add a Subway restaurant, another doctor's office, and a pharmacy.
"The different merchants that are going out there, as well as the hospital, those are permanent type occupations. Already we've seen a lot of people coming in from Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas," said Danny Anderson, Economic Development Committee.
The entire campus represents a $35 million investment, and the hospital center alone employs more than 250 people.
