Unemployment Benefits Expire This Weekend

More than one million unemployed people will start the new year without benefits.
JOPLIN, MO -- More than one million unemployed people will start the new year without benefits. Jobless benefits expire this weekend for people who receive long-term federal aid. These are payments that kick in when state insurance payments run out.

They're emergency benefits that were put in place during the 2008 recession, lasting up to 99 weeks for people seeking work. The program has been extended 11 times, but lawmakers didn't reach a year-end agreement to maintain it.

Senators are proposing a three-month extension that would pay back the missed checks to the long-term unemployed. The first vote is expected to be held January 6th.
