S.W.A.T. Called To A Joplin Home

Police officers and the S.W.A.T. team rushed to a Joplin home this evening after a man threatened to shoot his wife.

It started as a domestic dispute between 32-year-old Steven McDonald and his wife, at their home at 2614 Indiana Avenue. At one point, officers say McDonald threatened to shoot his wife. That's when she left the house, calling 9-1-1.

The 9-1-1 call came in just after 5:30 p.m. The woman stated her husband was threatening to shoot her with a rifle. "She was able to get about of the house, her children had gotten out of the house earlier," says Corporal Chuck Niess.

That's when Joplin police barricaded a section of Indiana Avenue, in front of the McDonald home, and called in the S.W.A.T team. Neighbors on that block were urged to stay inside. "I heard some commotion and I looked outside and saw police everywhere and saw some laying across the street, it looked like they had high powered rifles and I had no idea what was going on, we have some little kids in the house, so we basically locked all the doors and went to the back of the house and waited a while," says neighbor, Cal Denison.

While the S.W.A.T team prepared to make contact with Steven McDonald, police received a tip that he had already ran from the house. "Turns out that the husband was able to get out of the house before the first officers arrived, and he was arrested several blocks away, just a short time ago after neighbors called and reported him in the area," says Niess.

Police say McDonald stopped at a home a few blocks away, asking for a ride to Wal-Mart. Neighbors of the McDonalds say it was an eventful day in what's usually a quiet neighborhood. "Really quiet, I've never herd of anything around here at all," says Denison.

When officers came across McDonald walking down the street near 30th and Grand, he surrendered. He is expected to be charged with domestic violence.
