JOPLIN, MO.--- A theatre that was destroyed in the May 2011 tornado will soon have a place of their own. Performers have been moving from one place to another for productions over the past two years. Stained Glass Theatre Board members recently purchased a temporary home for their performances, and they hope to have it ready by curtain call next year.
"I can see our productions coming alive on this stage," said Kelly Weaver, Artistic Director.
Artistic Director Kelly Weaver looks at the future stage for performers of Stained Glass Theatre.
"It reminds me a lot of the building we were in before the tornado," said Weaver.
The Board purchased a former church building off of 21st and Annie Baxter as a temporary home.
"It's kind of a unique situation to find a building that you can convert into a theatre. So, it's nice that it already had a stage area, the auditorium had a nice sloped floor," said Weaver.
The former church has even more qualities to fit the theatre's needs.
"The acoustics inside are wonderful. We like to do our shows without using microphones. We like to have smaller crowds of about 150 and 180 people," said Gregg Murdock, Stained Glass Theatre Board President.
Members are planning renovations which include theatre seating, adding bathrooms and extending the lobby area.
"Even if it's just for a little while, this is where we'll be and where people can find us, and where we can serve the community," said Weaver.
Their goal is to eventually build a theatre at this location off of 26th Street and Maiden Lane. For now, Weaver hopes their first production in this building will be in mid-February.
"We can start to feel like we have a home again. This is Stained Glass home," said Weaver.
The Board kicked off a fundraising campaign earlier this year. The president says they are a third of the way to reaching their goal for their temporary location. They hope to raise $2 million for their permanent facility near the intersection of 26th and Maiden Lane.
