LAMAR, MO.--- Republic Services opens the Lamar landfill for public tours today. City officials say it lets people see how things work at the Prairie View Landfill. The city uses generators there to convert landfill gas into methane to create electricity. Lamar City Manager Lynn Calton says this helps lower Lamar citizens' electric bills. He tell us that gas comes from the city's trash as it decomposes.
"Most people don't understand what happens to their trash once they put it in their barrel and somebody comes and halls it off well this gives you a better understanding of what happens," said Lynn Calton, Lamar City Manager.
The landfill is opened to the pubic only once a year.
