JOPLIN, MO.--- Joplin police are investigating an attempted arson at Planned Parenthood. Officers responded to the center around 6:30 last night after an employee found a suspicious bag near the building. Authorities won't disclose what was in the bag. Police have released a surveillance picture of the incident.
Officers say the suspect unsuccessfully tried to burn the building down by putting the bag on the roof. According to the video surveillance timecode, the incident happened around midnight Wednesday. There was no damage to the building and no staff or patients were inside at the time.
"We have not identified who that suspect is at the time. We're asking anybody who may have any information on who this suspect might be, to please contact the Joplin Police Department," said Lt. Matt Stewart, Joplin Police Department.
JPD is working with the FBI, ATF, the state fire marshal and the Joplin Fire Department in this investigation. Planned Parenthood issued a statement this afternoon regarding this incident. President Paula Gianino wrote "we are working closely and in full cooperation with local and federal law enforcement authorities investigating this matter. We fully expect that the individual will be identified and brought to justice."
