PITTSBURG, KS.--- The Salvation Army of Pittsburg is kicking off the holidays with food, fun, and entertainment. The Salvation Army of Pittsburg's Annual Red Kettle Campaign begins today at JC Penney's in Meadowbrook Mall. Around this time of year, you can always count on the Salvation Army to ring in Thanksgiving and Christmas with lots of love.
"We are helping the public in various ways. Food, toys, emergency assistance, disaster services, and we want people to be aware that we are doing our annual fundraising events," said Gary Gugala, Corps Officer.
Their goal is to reach $60,000 by Christmas. Because of where Thanksgiving falls on the calendar, there's less time for them to collect donations.
"Time is a little shorter. So we're just praying and working and ringing bells. Trying to ask the community to support us for food and toys and our ministry throughout the year," said Gugala.
They're hoping the community will come out and help collect money by something as simple as ringing bells!
"I am on the disaster relief team and its been a lot of learning and a great opportunity for community service," said Astrid Zagorski, Volunteer Bell Ringer.
One volunteer bell ringer, Astrid, says she feels honored to be helping other people.
"We have a lot of needy people, and I think it's a way of sharing that we have a responsibility when we are well to share what we have," said Zagorski.
The Salvation Army is at Meadowbrook Mall right now, they'll be giving out food, toys, and holiday cheer until 8 tonight. If you're interested in donating, you can head to the Salvation Army's website by clicking here. If they reach their goal of $60,000 dollars, the director thinks they could help up to $1,000 families.
