JOPLIN, MO.--- An outside agency will soon take over medical care at the Joplin City Jail. The city council has approved a $39,000 contract with Advanced Correctional Healthcare. That means the group will provide a doctor to monitor the inmates' health as well as the medication and equipment needed for treatment. Workers say the agreement is similar to those already in place at the Jasper and Newton county jails.
"Advanced Correctional Healthcare, that's all they do. They are solely in correctional facilities - they're in several here in the State of Missouri. The doctors are very familiar with inmates and inmate medical care," said Shane Dotson, Joplin Jail Administrator.
Workers expect the contract to greatly reduce the amount of time jail workers have been spending taking inmates to local emergency rooms.
