New Books About John F. Kennedy Mark 50th Anniversary of Assassination

Local librarians report having seen a large influx in the number of books being published on President Kennedy's assassination.
PITTSBURG, KS.--- Friday will mark 50 years since the death of President John F. Kennedy. A number of new books are being published about the president and his assassination. You can find them on local book shelves. Local librarians report having seen a large influx in the number of books being published on President Kennedy's assassination.

"There's a lot of interest I think nationwide and perhaps even worldwide in that time period," said Earl Lee, Collection Development Librarian.

New works on Kennedy are not all local libraries have to offer.

"It's great for our students and other interested parties to be able to look at the original materials, handle the books that came out at the time, the newspapers that came out at the time, look at the original photographs," said Randy Roberts, Collector.

You can also find a lot of timeless, historical gems that could now be considered priceless artifacts. From original newspapers, to poems written by local citizens, and 50 year old books.

"Lots of people responded in different ways. This is one example to a local, a regional publication in memory of our nation's great president. So people would respond by writing poetry, by writing essays, by photojournalism. All kinds of responses," said Roberts.

All of these pieces do more than tell what happened, they capture the feelings and emotions of the American people at the time of Kennedy's death, providing a connection to younger generations.

"So that's kind of a reflection I think of how people responded to the event. The tragedy as they saw it. The fact that they memorialized it by hanging on to those souvenirs, those momentos, those artifacts at the time is very interesting," said Roberts.

The collection includes 50 year old news papers, books, photographs, and some special artifacts that are unique to this area. These original documents can be found at Pittsburg State University's library in their special collections section.
