JOPLIN, MO.--- A Missouri bridge improvement program receives national recognition. The Missouri Department of Transporation's Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program began in 2008 to rehabiliate and replace 802 of the state's worst bridges. The project was completed in November of last year, 14 months ahead of schedule. Now the program is 1 of 10 finalists in America's Transportation Awards Competition. The award is judged on schedule, budget, and innovation, as well as a seperate award based on a public vote.
"I think it shows that we're very innovated, looking at new ways to do things, new ways to save money, and leading the nation with this project I think really proves that to everyone in the United States and Missouri," said James Conley, Assistant Resident Engineer.
