JOPLIN, MO.--- A local church group gathers to pray for a Missouri criminal on death row. People came to McAuley Catholic High School chapel to pray for Convicted Murderer Joseph Franklin tonight. Franklin was supposed to receive the death sentence just after midnight, but during the vigil, it was announced that Franklin was granted a stay of execution. Those who attended the vigil do not support the death penalty and were sending up prayers for an alternative outcome.
"We will continue to pray for all those people that were victims of Mr. Franklin's. We'll continue to pray for him, too. But I just don't believe that taking his life is really going to be the only way to protect society," said Father Friedel, St. Peter the Apostle Church.
This was one of seven vigils held for Franklin today by the group "Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty."
