March of Dimes Premature-Birth Report Card Findings

Missouri earns a "C" on this year's March of Dimes Premature-Birth Report Card.

JOPLIN --- A pre-term birth is when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. In 2012, the Show Me State's pre-term birth rate rose slightly to 11.7%, compared to 11.6% the previous year.

Missouri has maintaned a "C" grade for seven years but the percentage has dropped significantly from 12.8 in 2006.

The March of Dimes report sites contributing factors are lack of insurance and smoking. Kansas received a "B" and both Oklahoma and Arkansas earned a "D" grade.

Only six states got an "A" grade this year.
