JOPLIN, MO.--- Some local operations that receive federal funding are closed today due to the government shutdown. Most essential services are still open. Calls to the Local Joplin WIC Office confirms they are still open today. The Mount Vernon Veterans Hospital is also still fully operating, the hospital employees there are not on a furlough.
Local USDA offices are closed until further notice, and employees do not have access to email. The Fort Scott National Historical Site's webpage shows the park is closed along with all other national parks. That includes the George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond. The Neosho Wildlife and Fish Hatchery is also closed to visitors but directors tell us workers are still feeding and tending to the animals.
