Joplin Woman Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud

Kathryn Stayton pled guilty to one count of wire fraud and admitted to embezzling more than 100 thousand dollars from her employer.

JOPLIN, MO.--- A Joplin woman pled guilty to one count of wire fraud and admitted to embezzling more than $100,000 from her employer. Kathryn Stayton, 36, was indicted by a federal grand jury back in June and was charged with 10 counts of wire fraud. During a plea agreement she pled guilty to one of those counts so the other nine counts would be dropped during her sentencing.

Stayton wrote more than 130 checks to herself and family members and deposited the checks into her own account. Stayton is responsible for a loss of more than $88,000 to Fletcher Auto Group and $13,000 to Credit Cars of Joplin. She also made fraudulent journal entries to the accounting records in an attempt to cover up the theft.
