JOPLIN, MO.--- It's been nearly a year in the making, but construction has begun on the Souls Harbor kitchen remodel. Georgia Jones is the executive director of the shelter. She says last year they served 20,000 meals in a kitchen that didn't have a refrigerator, a dishwasher or a big pantry. The shelter was able to raise $53,000 in donations to help cover the cost. The kitchen hasn't been updated in several decades and the time had come to finally update it into the 21st century.
"People are served efficiently and the safety of it is important. We had no idea until we started tearing into the project, no idea, how badly we need to remodel," said Georgia Jones, Souls Harbor Executive Director.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
