Joplin streets saw a big drop in accidents last year. Police report 1,762 crashes in 2013. That's a drop of 141 accidents from 2012, when there were more than 1900. What's causing those wrecks hasn't changed. Failure to yield the right of way, not paying attention to the road, and following too close account for one out of three collisions.
Joplin Police Sergeant Rusty Rives said, "The significant part about last year's specifically was that 1762 crashes was the lowest one we've recorded since 1990 - so we've been able to get those crashes down substantially."
In 2013, Joplin saw 6 fatal accidents and nearly 300 involving injuries. But the vast majority - 1400 - caused only property damage.
