(JOPLIN, MO) -- Project Graduation gives Joplin seniors a drug and alcohol-free way to celebrate the night after graduation.

Committee members have yet to raise enough funds for the lock-in party on May 20th.

The committee is half way to their goal of $30,000, but the party is fast approaching and seniors say it's a rite of passage they don't want to miss out on.

"To be a senior and get to go and just experience what everybody else is a realLy fun thing," Joplin R-8 senior Julia Lewis says.

Last year, the May tornado prevented seniors from having the lock-in party.

"A lot of my friends were upset they didn't get to have the last sort of send off of that night and missing out on a key experience of graduation," Lewis says.

Seniors hope the Joplin community will help out to make their special day happen.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS:

Project Graduation depends completely on funds raised by generous donations from local businesses, parents and from the community's support of our fundraising events. Upcoming fundraisers include:

Trivia Night will be held this Saturday evening, February 4th at the Joplin High School mall campus cafeteria from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.  Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the public is welcome.  The cost is $10.00 per person and there will be 8 people per team.   Food & soft drinks will be available for purchase.

February 7thCome out and watch the Joplin High School basketball teams face off against the Hillcrest teams from Springfield.  Games are at 4:30, 6:00 & 7:30 at Missouri Southern Young Gymnasium.  Project Graduation will be selling 50/50 tickets during the games.

We also have a Silent Auction that will be held on February 17th during the basketball homecoming games.  Games are at 6:00 & 7:30, again at Missouri Southern Young Gymnasium.  We are very excited about the items we've been receiving for the auction.  We will have items that appeal to men, women & teenagers and bidding prices to fit small up to large wallets!  Come support our JHS basketball teams and Project Graduation.

We are also inviting members of our community to adopt a student for Project Graduation.  We estimate the cost will be approximately $60.00 per student. If you would like to sponsor a student, please make your check payable to JHS Project Graduation and mail to:
