JOPLIN, MO.--- A local jail has upgraded to an automated commissary. Inmates at the Joplin City Jail can now purchase a variety of items through the system. They deposit cash in a specialized ATM then can use that account to buy snacks or hygiene products. Jail officials say the system means workers don't have to deal with cash transactions and also opens up access to over-the-counter medication and other basic supplies.
"Shampoo, lotion, clothing, shoes, am/fm radios - just about anything you would purchase at a local store, they can purchase through our local store," said Shane Dotson, Joplin Jail Administrator.
While the Swanson Corporation handles the commissary system, the jail does receive a percentage of the profits. That money is set aside to pay for programs for the inmates.
