JOPLIN, MO.--- The Joplin City Council will consider a request for a tourism grant. The Convention and Visitors Advisory Board is recommending funding for eight events in 2014. That includes Dickens Fest, Photo Spiva, the Joplin Memorial Run and a triathlon weekend. Rounding out the list are the Shoal Creek Water Festival, Joplin Disc Golf Club, a Salvation Army band event and MSSU homecoming.
"To encourage the growth of small events - that's what we're after. Events that happen every year, like the Joplin Memorial Run or Photo Spiva, they're very established and we help them with marketing dollars. We help them by bringing more people to town, which is the idea behind the whole thing," said Patrick Tuttle, Joplin CVB Director.
If council approves the requests - the eight events would split $100,000 in grant funding.
