JOPLIN, MOO--  Firefighters remind you of the increased danger of house fires during the winter months.

In 2011, heating equipment caused an estimated 53,000 house fires in the United States.

More than 400 people lost their lives in these type of blazes.

33% of the fires were caused by a space heater and 28% by unkept chimneys.

Firefighters urge you to clean heating equipment before use and to move flammable items away from every heating device in your home.

"And if you do have a fire in the house, go to your electrical panel and hit the main breaker and shut all of your electricity inside the house," says Galena Fire Chief Bill Hall

Firefighter also remind you to make sure your space heaters have an emergency shut off in case they tip over.
