JOPLIN, MO.--- More than 30 million pounds of pet food will soon be made at Crossroads Industrial Park west of Joplin.
"We wanted to be in the midwest obviously for reasons of ingredients and transportation,"states Bill Bishop, Blue Buffalo Company CEO.
Today, Blue Buffalo Company and community leaders broke ground at the future site of Heartland Pet Food Manufacturing's more than 400,000 square foot manufacturing and distribution center.
"They use a lot of natural products. They have a lot of intent to use as many suppliers in this area as possible,"states Rob O'Brian, Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.
The facility will create more than 150 jobs and potentially more business.
"As they really get going, I think we'll see other companies here actually expand because they'll have more business just from Heartland Pet Food Manufacturing," states O'Brian.
Company CEO Bill Bishop says the plant was a perfect fit for Joplin because of the community's work ethic.
"The way they handled the tragedy with the tornado, it impressed us. We like folks that get up get back to work," states Bishop.
The Blue Buffalo Company CEO expects crews to begin digging foundations this week. The facility will be fully operational by early 2015.
