Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow Part 1

Hair loss is a common problem that affects millions of men and women. What are your options and what would you do if your hair just started falling out?
SPRINGFIELD, MO.--- Hair loss is a common problem that affects millions of men and women. What are your options and what would you do if your hair just started falling out? Sid Johnson was faced with that question about hair loss and he did something about it. He decided to go sign up with Apollo Hair System. The closest location in our area is Springfield. He said he went years before having the courage to do something.

"I went without hair for 13 years and thought no one had anything that would please me," sid Sid Johnson, Apollo Hair System Client.

He went to great lengths to hide his hair loss and even did the combover.

"I was one of those guys. My hair touched my shoulder on the left hand side. I combed it over and sprayed it down," said Johnson.

He also made sure to avoid the wind.

"I would pull up at the side and look at the trees to see which direction the wind was blowing," said Johnson.

Donna Nelson works at the Apollo Hair System in Springfield and she started back in the late 1980's.

"Hair loss runs in my family. My aunts' had very little hair," said Donna Nelson, Apollo Hair System, Springfield.

Don't say the words toupee or rug around Nelson.

"It's negative. It's a negative connotation to what I do," said Nelson.

Basically, she applies special tape to the top of Sid's head and it sticks there for 30 days. You then have to come into the office and reapply it, and while you're there they cut your regular hair. The cost of the system can add up.

"On average, 1,000 to 12 hundred a year. The initial cost," said Johnson.

If you look online, there are other options like hair transplants, and those can be even more costly.

"A session of transplant 4 to 5,000 dollars, to get any amount you have to do three sessions," said Nelson.

They also have several tools to help you grow hair naturally. Nelson took a look at my scalp and noticed a lot of my pores were clogged with a chemical called sebum, that essentials blocks new hair growth.  She also sells a laser comb that electronically increases blood circulation on your scalp. That runs a few hundred dollars. Sid says when you hair falls out, many men become shut ins.

"The guys don't go to funerals, church, anywhere they can't wear a ballcap," said Johnson.

Nelson has had dozens of clients over the years and she says it's best that her work is on the down low.

"We like to say our best work goes unnoticed. You see bad ones out there," said Nelson.
