JOPLIN, MO. --- "It's a wonderful atmosphere, just a wonderful place to enjoy Christmas dinner," Homer Schemahorn says.

Schemahorn and his wife carolyn have been coming to first community church for christmas dinner for several years.

"The favorite part really is association with other real nice people a wonderful meal," Schemahorn says.

The couple says they come here so they aren't so alone.

"Part of our family has been here and left yesterday, so it's a real conveinence to come and be with other people," he says.

About 50 volunteers helped put the dinner on today.

"We just feel like this is a time to give ourselves to the community and we do not want people to be alone at Christmas time," Jim and Stephanie Evertitt say.

Church members and others prepared 800 meals this year. Carole Dailey says her and her family are grateful to have a place like this to go.

"We come about every other Christmas, but we always get to see a lot  of our friends here," Dailey says.

This is the 39th year the First Community Church has held this special event.

"I appreciate this church and what they do for all the people that are alone on Christmas day," Schemahorn says.

Volunteers also delivered meals to people who couldn't make it out to the church. This year they delivered about 300 meals.
