NEOSHO, MO.--- The winter is a good time to use a fireplace, but before you do, you might want to do a chimney check. The Neosho Fire Department is encouraging residents to make sure their chimneys are ready to go. Firefighters say during the winter, many fires start at the chimney or flue. You can check them yourself but when in doubt, a professional is best. The experts suggest getting your chimney checked at least once a year.
"Make sure your chimney is clear and creosol can build up. Birds nest and any other critters that might have gotten in there during the summer months. You just want to make sure it's inspected and clean," says Mike Ads, Neosho Fire Department.
Firefighters are also encouraging residents to properly dispose of ashes from their fireplace. They say it's best to put them in a metal can outside and away from your home.
