JOPLIN, MO.--- Empire District crews install a new structure today to carry extra power to south Joplin. Workers installed a 8-foot base steel pole earlier this afternoon at 50th and Connecticut. The beam will connect electrical lines to a new substation in the area and provide extra power for new and existing customers. Officials with the electric company say the installation is also necessary to support the upgraded power line that will serve the new Mercy Hospital Joplin.
"The new hospital is requiring two independant feeds, so this will provide greater strength and also capacity for two new lines that will come in and hit this structure," said John Donaldson, Line Engineering Manager.
The line work will be done by the end of this year. The substation carrying electricity through the lines to Mercy and other customers in the area should be complete in spring 2014.
