JOPLIN, MO.--- An area energy company is recognized for its hours of safety. Empire District Electric was honored for having a million hours worked without an injury. Representatives from the National Safety Council of the Ozarks were on hand at the ceremony. The million hour mark has only been attained six times in the groups history. Empire workers say they have dangerous jobs and safety is a number one priority.
"When it comes to the weather conditions. They're out in the worst weather conditions that you can imagine. When it's an ice storm, tornado come through or some kind of weather, that's when they have to work those odd hours of the day and night in different conditions," said Pete Babb, Empire District Electric.
The last time they achieved this honor was 10 years ago.
