What to Consider When Buying Flood Insurance

If you are thinking about getting flood insurance to protect your home, it's best to talk to an insurance agent.
CARTHAGE, MO.--- A State Farm agent says Jasper County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program. You can purchase insurance through FEMA, but there is a 30 day waiting period. Most people get this type of insurance when they are located in a flood plain. There are also supplements you can add to your homeowner's policy to cover backup from sewer or drains.

"Water coming up from the ground is going to be considered flood and is pretty much excluded on most normal homeowners and renters insurance policies, that's where the flood insurance comes into play," said Jeff Montgomery, State Farm.

He also advises people to keep down spouts and gutters clear, and to make sure water drains away from your home. That can prevent more problems down the road.
