JOPLIN, MO.--- MoDOT workers are adding a few more traffic signs and finishing up pavement striping. Project engineers say they chose a roundabout for that intersection because it's a high traffic area. Having a traffic light causes a lot of congestion and roundabouts allows drivers to keep moving. Engineers tell us it also helps keep the air clean and Joplin is close to being in a environmental danger zone.
"Joplin is very close to going over that thresh hold, which would kick in some criteria that would not be pleasant for roads in this area," said Dan Salisbury, Asst. District Engineer.
He says roundabouts are a learning curve for many drivers, but there are more advantages to them than there are disadvantages.
