SPRINGFIELD, MO.--- Formal charges are filed in the disappearance and murder of a Springfield girl. Late this afternoon, the Greene County prosecuting attorney filed charges of first degree murder, armed criminal action and child kidnapping against Craig Michael Wood, 45, of Ash Grove. The charges stem from the kidnapping and murder of Hailey Owens, 10.
Court documents show Wood grabbed Owens as she was walking down Lombard Street yesterday afternoon. Eye witnesses gave authorities a description of Wood and his vehicle, which helped lead them to a home at 1538 East Stanford. When investigators searched the home, they found Owens body concealed inside two trash bags stuffed in a small tote.
According to an investigator with the medical examiner's office, Owens suffered a small gunshot wound at the base of her skull and also had apparent ligature marks on her arms. Wood works in the Springfield Public School System as a paraprofessional and athletic coach. The superintendent says Woods employment has been suspended until the criminal investigation is resolved.
