NEOSHO, MO.--- Tyson Foods has donated $25,000 to Bright Futures in Neosho. The money will buy food for the backpack program.
"One of our program coordinators for the backpack program had actually heard about the grant and got the ball rolling, and we were able to submit that to Tyson and we fell within the criteria to receive the grant," said Barb Lake, Bright Futures.
The program currently serves 330 kids a week. Bright Futures supplies these kids with food during the weekend who face financial difficulty.
"So we are so excited that half of that year is taken care of through Tyson and the rest of the school year is funded through the other donations we received throughout the year from the community," said Lake.
Volunteers meet every Wednesday to put together the backpacks for the kids to take home every Friday. Today, Pat Bourke from Tyson helped.
"It was great. I was telling Barb I was in line to put in the granola bars, and you're supposed to put two in but I felt compelled to put three in some of them. And come to find out that we may run out of granola bars. So I need to run to Wal-Mart and get some more granola bars on my own nickel," said Pat Bourke, Tyson Foods.
Bright Futures staff say they can now focus on helping more kids in need.
"We're excited that we are completely funded. We look forward to the food donation throughout the year because that will help with our cost to go down if we don't have to buy a certain item because it's donated," said Lake.
