LAMAR, MO.--- "It's great because you can just let your dog run," said Jamie Bailey, Lamar resident.
Jamie Bailey is a dog owner in Lamar. She says the new park is a huge milestone for the local dog population.
"Oh yeah, they've needed one of these for a long time, because a lot of people don't have large yards or they don't have fenced in yards," said Bailey.
The Trula Cain Dog Park in Lamar opened on Monday after two years of construction. Lamar's animal control officer says it was named after a local woman who founded the Lamar Humane Society.
"She was the president for 50 years and she had done so much providing for the animals here in town," said Sandy Alexander, Lamar Animal Control Officer.
Residents who use the park with their dogs only have to follow some pretty basic rules. Pet owners need to be sure dogs are vaccinated and have city tags to come in.
"Even if you bring them up and walk them around the trail, you can come in here and sit down on the benches and relax after your walk, and your dog can have some freedom," said Bailey.
Although the project took longer than anticipated, residents say they're thankful for all the volunteers who helped put it together.
