Subway Restaurants Support Summer Reading

An area restaurant is encouraging kids to read this summer.
JOPLIN, MO.--- Subway restaurants are teaming up with the Joplin and Webb City public libraries. A reading program is designed for kids to read 10 different books in 10 weeks. If they complete the program, they will receive a free kids meal. Organizers say it's important for kids to practice their reading skills during the summer months.

"It's a great idea because it helps maintain reading skills over the summer. It's usually called the summer slide. Kids will lose a month to two months worth of their school education during the summer and they have to build that back up when they go to school. And it will help the teachers not have to do that as much," said Jeana Glockley, Joplin Public Library.

More than a hundred cards have been given out since the program started earlier this month and will continue until August 31st. Currently, both libraries are out of the cards. Subway officials are considering printing more due to the demand.
