St. Mary's Elementary School Moves In

Volunteers help staff move into the new St. Mary's Elementary School, which was destroyed by the May 2011 tornado.

JOPLIN, MO--- Dozens of volunteers began moving boxes and supplies into a school that was destroyed by the May 2011 tornado. Box after box, and desk after desk. Today was moving day for St. Mary's Catholic Church and Elementary School. The new building is located at 3025 Central City Road in southwest Joplin. In addition to the school, the campus will also house a new church, parish center, and a rectory. In August, approximately 200 children, in grades pre-K to fifth, will attend. Volunteer coordinator Jim Castler says the church's journey, since it was destroyed in the May 2011 tornado, hasn't been easy but a lot of good people have helped along the way.

"This is recovery, this is revitalizing our whole community, and we just want to share that with Joplin in general," says volunteer coordinator, Jim Castler.

The elementary school is moving from their temporary location at 802 S. Byers. St. Peter's Middle School will now move into that building once renovations are complete. Classes will start August 20th.
