Southeast High School Students Volunteer in Baxter Springs

Students from Southeast High School are spending this weekend providing food to victims of the Baxter Springs tornado.
BAXTER SPRINGS, KS.--- Volunteers have been pouring into Baxter Springs from all over the Four State region to assist in tornado recovery efforts. Students from Southeast High School are spending this weekend providing food to victims of the Baxter Springs tornado.

"I find, since it's so close to home, I think it's an amazing cause to help. I helped with the Joplin tornado and it warms my heart to know that I'm helping someone and doing good," said Elizabeth Dey, Southeast High School Senior.

The teens have spent part of this week preparing food in their culinary arts class, over the next few days, they'll deliver that food to volunteers and victims in Baxter Springs. School Superintendent Doctor Glenn Fortmayer accompanied the students on the trip and says when they received a call for assistance from the Kansas Ministerial Alliance, they did not hesitate to help.

"All four of our kitchens prepared about 2,000 different items that we sent down here today. And we will have adults and students here throughout the weekend helping to support this operation here. In conjunction with the church members from all over the different churches in the area," said Dr. Glenn Fortmayer, USD 247 School Superintendent.

Blake Collingsworth says this experience is an eye opener because the tornado hit so close to home.

"It really does connect close to home, and I helped in Pittsburg after their incident and it just really effects everybody," said Blake Collingsworth, Southeast High School Senior.

For Lenna Swank, she says she never thought it would feel so good to help strangers.

"I feel if you're actually helping people in need, it makes you feel better about yourself. You're actually doing something not just for you, or just for your family, but you're actually doing something for people you don't know," said Lenna Swank, Southeast High School Senior.

Southeast High School students along with many other volunteers will be serving free food and drink all weekend. The tent is located one block west of 12th and Military Avenue in Baxter Springs.
