CARTHAGE, MO.--- "It was about 23 years ago when I was painting the ceiling and I feel it, because I am 75-years-old now," said Sam Butcher, Precious Moments Creator.
Precious Moments Creator Sam Butcher is repainting the clouds on the chapel ceiling because he says they don't look as real as his other paintings, they look as if they've been cut out of paper.
"I want the soft feeling that I get in my other paintings, so hurt or not, I'm doing the job," said Butcher.
He says at his age, painting above his head isn't as easy as it used to be. He wants visitors to have the best experience possible and see the chapel as he saw it in Italy.
"When I was in Milan, I saw a beautiful little chapel on a hill and I said to myself, that's the kind of chapel that I'm going to build," he said.
Mr. Butcher says he traveled through several states searching for the perfect location to build the world he imagined.
"I looked at the hill, completely empty, no trees like you see now, no flowers, nothing. I said, that is where I am going to build the chapel and that's how it happened," he said.
The chapel Mr. Butcher envisioned is the chapel in Carthage, millions of people travel from across the world to see today. By perfecting it, he hopes visitors will feel the same way he felt when he first created it.
