PITTSBURG, KS.--- The amount needed to purchase and expand the current facility is $1.3 million. The Bicknell Foundation donated $1 million towards the project earlier this month. The $300,000 rewarded by the City of Pittsburg, through their revolving loan fund, will allow for the purchase of 20,000 square feet of land around the facility. Pittsburg Schools Superintendent Destry Brown says by expanding the building, more can be offered.
"We can move forward and start making the plans that we need to, to expand that facility and to start putting new programs together. Which will open doors of opportunities for more of our citizens," said Destry Brown, Pittsburg Schools Superintendent.
Brown says some of the programs that will be offered at the tech center include automotive technology, culinary arts, and welding.
The commission also approved an ordinance to regulate the sale of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, along with products containing them. The ordinance says the drug will now be on restrictive sale, meaning only people with a prescription can purchase ephedrine and pseudoephedrine products. Pittsburg Chief Of Police Mendy Hulvey says the ordinance will help stop people who come to Pittsburg to buy the drug to make meth.
"As far as the police department's concerned, this was not something we took lightly. We've been doing our research for quite some time. Actually, the regionalization effort to schedule pseudoephdrine in Kansas, or at least in Southeast Kansas, has been going on for quite some time," said Mendy Hulvey, Pittsburg Police Chief.
Chief Hulvey says the next step is to meet with the city's pharmacies to make sure they understand the rules of the ordinance before it goes into effect.
Also at tonight's meeting, City Manager Daron Hall gave an update to the council about a grant. The city received to build a 10 foot walking trail on south rouse. Hall says the grant is for more than $930,000. The walking trail would be built on South Rouse up to the Centennial and Rouse intersection. The commission decided to table the vote to accept the grant until the August 12th meeting.
