JOPLIN, MO.--- Families staying at Joplin's Ronald Mcdonald House get a little lesson in reading. Representatives with "Parents as Teachers" hosted a reading to your children program this evening. The goal is to encourage families to read 30 minutes a day to their kids from birth to age 5. Experts say these are critical years for your kids and can shape their reading skills for years to come.
"The research says that the first couple of years in school, you learn to read then after that you read to learn. So it's important to instill the love of reading before they get to school," said Patty Wheeler, Parents as Teachers.
Each family who attended today received a Dr. Seuss book to start their child's library.
