NEOSHO, MO.--- "You know the fish and wild life services have put a lot of enfaces on getting kids back in touch with nature as well as the parents. An event like this gives us an opportunity to do something like that," said David Hendrix, Neosho Fish Hatchery Manager.
Fishing poles and bait were provided for the kids to help reel in their four fish limit. Volunteers also cleaned the fish.
"Clean them, put them on ice. Wash them put them on ice in a Ziploc bags. So when the kids take them home, the parents are ready to cook them," said Hendrix.
State Representative Bill Reiboldt also attended the event.
"I have four grand kids and a son, and a wife that are right over the bank over there fishing, and they're about to catch their limit. So we may have them on our grill tonight, who knows," said Bill Reiboldt, State Representative.
Along with Congressman Billy Long who had fun catching fish with the kiddos.
"7 years old. Last year he was 6 and couldn't attend, because you have to be 7 to 12. So he waited all year and he was fired up. He got out here and caught four fish just bang, bang, bang, bang, and that's the limit. So he was thrilled. Him and his grandpa had them cleaned and off they went," said Billy Long, Congressman.
Fish Hatchery Manager David Hendrix says he's proud to host this event.
"They are our future and we're just glad to be apart and able to shape and expose them into something safe and fun," said Hendrix.
The Kids Fishing Derby will happen again next year.
