MSSU Students Move into Dorms

Missouri Southern students are moving into their dorms today and for some, it's a brand new experience.
JOPLIN, MO.--- Freshmen are starting to settle into their new home, Missouri Southern State University.

"I'm excited and I'm a little nervous to get to all of my classes on time and everything. But, I think I'll be good," said Heather Taylor, MSSU freshman.

Freshman Heather Taylor is moving two hours away from her family and brought some special items with her to make the transition a bit easier. She's a little nervous, but says she thinks it will be an easy adjustment.

"I'm pretty independent, so I think I will be good adjusting to that. But it will be different, you know, coming back and then you know being alone when you're coming back and being with family," said Taylor.

Heather is an only child.

"We're having empty nest syndrome all at the same time," said Stan Taylor, Heather's father.

Stan says it's a bitter sweet day.

"Even though I'm upset to a certain degree that, that we are losing our only child from our house. I know how exciting it was for me, so I know she's experiencing those type of feelings," said Stan.

"I'm going to do recruitment, so hopefully I'll get into a good sorority and then I hope I'll meet a lot of new, life long friends. And I just hope, you know, God gets me through everything good and I'll have a good career ahead of me," said Taylor.

Heather's dad says in this moment, he's learned it's more about the student than the parent.

"This is a new chapter, so it's an opportunity as a parent to give different advice. So it's a learning opportunity for both parents and children. You need to expand your relationship with your child. And now going to college, this gives you a new opportunity to share different experiences that you've had from the past that they can now learn from," said Stan.

Heather's family will head back home tonight, leaving Heather anxious for the first day of classes on Monday morning.
