Missouri Proposal Would Raise Interstate Speed Limit to 75 MPH

A Southwest Missouri lawmaker wants to hike the interstate speed limit to 75 miles per hour.
LAMAR, MO.--- A Southwest Missouri lawmaker wants to hike the interstate speed limit to 75 miles per hour. That's five above the current 70 mile per hour limit. While Arkansas has the same speed requirement, it's an increase Kansas and Oklahoma already have in effect, along with about a dozen other states. The measure was proposed by Lamar Republican Mike Kelly. He recognizes that some opponents may worry about a potential rise in traffic crashes, but says a recenty study in Texas found no correlation between higher speeds and wrecks.

"If you look at the map, other than California, every state west of us, in some form or fashion, has areas that hit 75," said Mike Kelly, Missouri District 127.

House Bill 1215 would apply only to speed limits on rural interstates and freeways.
