MIAMI, OK.--- Getting a new backpack and school supplies are what some kids look forward to before their first day of school. However, for some families, being able to afford everything on their child's school supply list can be hard. Maegen Gill is a mother of five, and says trying to get her kids the supplies they need for their first day of school is almost impossible.
"Their list are so long that, there's, I just can't, I can't get it all," said Maegen Gill, parent.
The Miami school based social workers held a "Back to School" fair to make sure families like Maegen's receive their school supplies for free.
"This helps us where I don't have to spend all of my money to give these kids, school supplies, on top of bills and on top of car payments," said Gill.
22 vendors were there to help with free eye and dental exams, hair cuts, and immunization shots. The event helps take the stress off of parents and can boost kids confidence knowing that they have the same supplies as the rest of their classmates.
"I like that they can come to school with the supplies and they're not coming with nothing, you know, so they don't stand out from the other kids," said Dana Giles, Miami school based social worker.
"It makes the kids happy, to be able to go and get their school supplies. It makes them happy knowing that they will have something to go to school," said Gill.
Families started lining up two hours early at today's back to school event. More than 900 students we there to receive their supplies for the first day of school.
